Reston, VA (February 7, 2018) —Today, the Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council (BWLDC), an affiliate of the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA), announced its endorsement of seven candidates for public office in Montgomery County:
“With his many years of experience teaching elementary school, combined with his many years of public service as a Montgomery County councilmember, and strong commitment to workers’ rights, Marc Elrich is uniquely suited to serve as the next Montgomery County Executive,” said David Allison, Business Manager of the BWLDC.
Along with Mr. Elrich, in 2013 Councilmembers Riemer and Navarro walked the picket line with LIUNA members when they went on strike against Potomac Disposal. Councilmember Tom Hucker has worked closely with LIUNA over the years to address concerns related to County sanitation contracts, and when a State Delegate, was responsible for passing a landmark piece of legislation extending the State’s prevailing wage to cover WSSC capital projects.
Chris Wilhelm, Andrew Friedson, and Ben Shnider, who are each seeking elected office in Montgomery County for the first time, impressed the BWLDC with their energy and enthusiasm, and their understanding of the importance of union membership to addressing income inequality.
“Across the Baltimore-Washington region, the BWLDC seeks to endorse and support candidates for elected office who align with the values of our members. The seven candidates we have endorsed today in Montgomery County are part of that effort,” commented Allison.
