LIUNA Triples Endorsement of Brooke Lierman for Maryland Comptroller

Annapolis, Md. (October 17, 2022) - Today, three affiliates of the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) announced their endorsement of Brooke Lierman for Maryland Comptroller.

The Baltimore Washington Laborers’ District Council was the first LIUNA affiliate to endorse Lierman. Now, all of the remaining LIUNA affiliates that represent members in Maryland - LIUNA Mid-Atlantic Region, West Virginia and Appalachian Laborers’ District Council and LIUNA Local 202R – have backed Lierman.

Lierman’s experience and extensive agenda dedicated to Maryland’s working families earned her the collective LIUNA endorsement. She has included unions in her plans to improve working conditions through new procurement and programs. One of those programs involves the creation of a Labor Advisory Board comprised of union representatives.

Of the many responsibilities of Comptroller, the Comptroller’s seat on the Board of Public Works has a substantial effect on Maryland’s construction industry where a majority of LIUNA members work. Not only does the Board of Public Works have the authority to approve or reject construction projects, but the Board of Public Works can also require standards that protect workers, contractors, and communities alike.

“Brooke understands that decisions made during procurement determine a project’s outcome,” said Dennis L. Martire, LIUNA Vice President and Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager. “Her commitment to best-value contracting and the use of project labor agreements will benefit Maryland’s economy because it will prevent companies from cutting corners that lead to costly construction problems.”

“I am honored to have the endorsement of Maryland’s LIUNA members who have helped build the infrastructure that is so critical to our state,” said Delegate Brooke Lierman. “I look forward to working with LIUNA to ensure that quality is the driving force of future investments so that Maryland’s infrastructure will last for generations to come.”

Construction workers often enter the industry through apprenticeship and training, and Lierman intends to promote new and existing apprenticeship opportunities such as LIUNA’s program.

“It means a lot that Brooke recognizes apprenticeship as a way towards a prosperous career,” Martire said. “The technical jobs that apprenticeships prepare workers for are just as vital to Maryland’s economy as jobs that require a college education and, with her leadership, apprenticeships are going to get the investment they deserve.”

Throughout her career, she has advanced legislation aimed at Maryland’s workforce such as the Healthy Working Families Bill which made paid sick leave accessible to working Marylanders. She also has fought for workers in legal cases and won settlements for them.

“As a delegate and as an attorney, Brooke has always fought for workers,” Martire said. “Electing Brooke as Maryland’s next Comptroller is instrumental in creating an economy where Maryland’s working families thrive.”
